Father Baker was named “Venerable” in 2011 by Pope Benedict XVI. STEP THREE - Beatification. To be beatified, a miracle attributed to the potential saint’s intercession needs to be verified by the Vatican. This is done through an examination by a team of medical experts and theologians. And that’s where Father Baker’s cause hit a snag. Evidence of one medical miracle “didn’t pass the muster that was needed” by evaluators in Rome, Msgr. LiPuma told Catholic News Service. Entering his 90s, Father Baker ’s body began to slow, but his mind was sharp and filled with ways to assist those in need. Those records that have been left behind from that era tell a story of a bustling “City of Charity” that did more good than could be imagined. By 1900, the now famed child care center tended to over 600 troubled kids, renowned for its holistic approach—education of soul, mind, and body—guided by this gentle, tender presence. Like other apostles of charity, Father Baker had a built-in radar for the further needs of God’s people in need . Father Baker was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Buffalo in 1876. He was immediately assigned as assistant to the failing St. Joseph’s Orphanage and St. John’s Protectory in Limestone Hill, N.Y. Baker saw the venture, which was deeply in debt, as a floundering enterprise of the church and requested reassignment. As for the claims, he said: “I think they’re all from around western New York State.”. Because the boy’s mother had prayed to the Virgin Mary and Father Baker , she credited them with a miracle (Koerner 2005, 45–46), rather than acknowledging that her son’s condition was not as bad as it had appeared and that his body’s own natural healing mechanisms were activated. “A City of Charity” Father Baker was surprised by his first priestly assignment – he was appointed assistant superintendent at Limestone Hill under his old friend, Father Hines. The Bishop of Buffalo wanted Nelson there because of his business sense and organizational ability.
