For many years, Father Baker had dreamed of a fitting tribute to his patroness, Our Lady of Victory. His parish had grown, and the church was unable to hold the thousands who flocked to his Masses. Each time he thought he could begin, some emergency arose or a new building project took precedence, and an expansion of the existing church was. This is the cover of “Father of the Fatherless ,” a new release from Voyage Comics, which tells the story of Venerable Father Nelson Baker, a Buffalo, N.Y., priest up for sainthood who is beloved for his work with the poor. Learn more about the inspirational work of Father Baker and the impact he has had on many children, adults, and families. All during his priestly life, friends and parishioners credited Father Baker with working miraculous cures. From the time he pastored his first parish in Corning, New York, and during his long tenure in Lackawanna, evidence of cures wrought through his intercession were remembered and recorded by those who witnessed them. Father Baker lived by two simple rules - pay attention to others’ suffering, and work to fix it - that turned his work into something new. His innovation was a system of cradle-to-grave care that is still being imitated today. Father Baker ’s Cause for Canonization began when he was named “Servant of God” by Vatican officials in 1987. He received the second title in the historic sainthood process in 2011 as he was named “Venerable.” His cause awaits the confirmation of a miracle to move on to the next step, beatification. Father Baker ’s Shining Example IN GOD’S SERVICE—Msgr. Nelson Baker , a Buffalo priest who was commonly known as Father Baker, is pictured with children in an undated, colorized photo provided by Our Lady of Victory Institutions. Crowds swelled, and the faithful vied to touch the dead monsignor’s ring or to press against it “holy relics” they brought (Thousands 1936). As one news article explained, “This, in the tradition of the Church, is tantamount to a blessing bestowed by a living divine” (Father Baker 1936). Canonization allows for the public veneration of the Saint by the Universal Church. With joyful anticipation, all of us are waiting for that glorious day when Father Baker will officially be declared Saint Nelson Baker ! To assist his Cause, supporters are asked to regularly say his Prayer for Canonization.
