Father Baker was shocked at his first assignment from the Bishop – he was appointed assistant superintendent of the institutions at Limestone Hill under his friend Father Hines. Father Baker ’s first assignment was to serve as assistant superintendent at the same Limestone Institutions for which he volunteered as a young man. The institutions’ crippling debt forced Father Baker to request a transfer and he was sent to St. Mary’s Parish in Corning, N.Y. Father Nelson Baker with some of the many orphans he helped over his long tenure at Our Lady of Victory , funded in part by his seemingly inexplicable discovery of natural gas on parish property.
