In the late 70’s, Hansen was again evaluated by psychiatrist, Dr . Robert McMannon, who examined him in conjunction with a Larceny from a Building conviction (when he stole a chain saw from a big box store). Hansen was imprisoned at the United States Penitentiary in Lewisburg , Pennsylvania, but was sent back to Alaska in 1988 and incarcerated at Lemon Creek Correctional Centre. In 1977 he was arrested for stealing a chainsaw and sentenced to five years in prison. After a customary mental evaluation, a prison psychiatrist concluded that Hansen suffered from “bipolar-effective disorder” and requested that the courts order him to take lithium to control his mood swings. Hansen was caught in 1983 after a woman escaped after being abducted, and ultimately sentenced to 461 years in prison, plus life. Hansen was convicted in 1984 after confessing to killing mostly dancers and prostitutes during a 12-year span. He was convicted of just four of the murders in a deal that spared him having to. After years and years of rape and murder, Hansen finally made one mistake that would end his killing spree in June of 1983. According to historydaily.org, Hansen abducted teenage sex worker Cindy Paulson and raped and tortured her in the basement of his home, according to the Anchorage Daily News. Robert Hansen had barely unpacked his bags in Alaska before he started his crimes. In short order, the sex workers he had tried to assault spoke to the police, describing the stuttering, acne-scarred man. Between 1980 and 1983, Hansen went on a murderous rampage killing between 17 and 37 women in the Anchorage, Alaska area. Hansen , a small-business owner and pillar of the community, was also an avid hunter, and used young girls as prey when he decided he needed a more challenging hunt. Hansen was sentenced to 461 years without the possibility of parole, ensuring he’d never see the light of day again. He died in prison in 2014, but his crimes left scars on Alaska that will never fully heal.
