In her late teens and early twenties, Lacey ’s mental and physical health began to deteriorate. Diagnosed with autism, she also exhibited symptoms of severe social anxiety, which further alienated her from society. She was emaciated, weighing 96 pounds, and tested positive for COVID-19. On January 3, 2022, emergency medical workers in Louisiana responded to a 911 call reporting that 36-year-old Lacey Ellen Fletcher , who suffered from locked-in syndrome had stopped breathing at the house she shared with her parents in Slaughter, Louisiana. The coroner confirmed that Lacey’s cause of death “ stemmed from severe medical neglect , which led to chronic malnutrition, acute starvation, immobility, acute ulcer formation, osteomyelitis which is bone infection which led finally to sepsis.”. After reviewing the case files and interviewing the Fletchers several times, he found no signs of callousness , emotional detachment or evidence that they intended to harm or injure Lacey.
